Greg addressing Gala Dinner in Bristol
Fairtrade Gold pioneer, Greg Valerio MBE, spoke passionately about how small-scale gold mining is one of the most dangerous and low-paid industries in the world, and involves 160 million people. The use of mercury in the extraction process is hugely damaging to human health and the environment.
A new machine enables gold miners to extract 4 times the amount of gold without using mercury – and Bristol raised this money at a wonderful Gala event last night to celebrate Healthy City Week.
The event included one lucky guest winning the Golden Ticket, which was hidden inside a wrapper of Divine chocolate (Willy Wonka style!) and won a beautiful Fairtrade Gold necklace from Liz Earle’s collection!

The event was organised by Go Green Bristol, Bristol Fairtrade and Bristol Green Capital Partnership, and sponsored by the Co-operative and Bristol jewellers, Diana Porter. Diana announced that evening that all her 9k and 18k gold pieces will now be made using Fairtrade Gold as standard, a massive commitment to ethical jewellery.
